Peony Talk

You’ve heard us say it before and we will say it again – we LOVE peonies and our customers do, too! They are easily one of the most popular cut Spring flowers, but that’s the only problem…. they are only available during the Spring season! A few short months of these beauties is never enough. Maybe that’s what adds to their popular demand?

A few tips for you newbies on the block – when buying peonies (if you want them to last as long as possible) buy them when they are a tight ball shape. They aren’t as pretty when they aren’t yet open but that just means it’s going to last longer for you once you’re home! The small ball will open and continue to open into that huge beautiful bloom you know and love.

As we just discussed, the peonies have very large blooms with multiple petals once they are opened. This makes them top heavy SO when you get them home and cut them for your vase it’s best that they are not too tall. The shorter (closer) you keep them to the base of the vase when they start to become more open they won’t droop down and lose their ability to get water to their beautiful bloom.

Last but not least, and truthfully this goes for all flowers – change the water regularly and re-cut the stems so they are able to properly drink!!!!!! Peonies are especially big drinkers but it is most important to add water throughout the days so they have a steady source. Also a quick tip is to make sure no foliage leaves are in the water. When the foliage leaves (of any flower) are left in the water, they start to rot and then create bacteria in the water which is not something you want around your precious peonies!
