Seasonal: Spring Equinox

Posted by Heather on March 12, 2020

WELCOME SPRING

The first day of Spring 2020 is Thursday, March 19th (YAY)!
This is the earliest spring equinox we've had in over a century.
The last time spring arrived this early was in 1896.....
yes, you did the math right, that's 124 years ago!

WHAT IS AN EQUINOX?

The word equinox comes from the Latin words for “equal night”—
aequus (equal) and nox (night).

On the equinox, the length of day and night is nearly equal in all parts of the world.
On the March equinox, the Sun crosses the celestial equator
from south to north. It’s called the “celestial equator”
because it’s an imaginary line
in the sky above the Earth’s equator.
